FAQ's

Be part of the Hoyt Sherman Place Theater Legacy . . .
Name a Seat!

Thanks to the many contributions received from over 500 individuals, foundations, corporations and public organizations, the first phase of the Theater restoration and renovation project, including installation of an air conditioning system, is about to begin. Construction will start this spring and is scheduled to be completed in December - just in time for the Des Moines Metro Opera performance of AMAHL and the Night Visitors and the Ballet Theatre of Des Moines' performance of The Nutcracker.

The first phase of the restoration project will enhance the beauty of the Theater auditorium as well as provide for the safety and comfort of the patrons and performers. In order to complete this phase, however, we need your help.

Contributions are needed to refurbish the 1,200 seats in the Theater. The seats are the original ones installed in 1923, and needless to say, they have become worn over time, are not as comfortable as the seats made today and do not meet safety standards.

Your investment in “Naming a Seat” is a personalized opportunity to support the Hoyt Sherman Place Theater in this important aspect of our restoration. It is truly a unique opportunity for you to become part of the Hoyt Sherman Place Theater legacy. Contributors to “Name a Seat” will have their name(s) (corporate, business, organization, family or individual—it’s your choice) engraved on a brass plaque and affixed to a seat in the restored Theater. Future patrons will know you supported the restoration and renovation of the beautiful, historic Hoyt Sherman Place Theater.

Places Everyone!

Where do you want your seat to be in the restored Hoyt Sherman Place Theater?

Take your place in the balcony for a contribution of $200, main floor for $400, marquee/center stage for $500 or in a loge seat for $750.

Benefits to Naming a Seat
In addition to the naming rights of a seat, contributors will also receive a Friends of Hoyt Sherman Place Foundation special one-year membership. Loge and Marquee seat contributors will receive a “Marquee” membership and Main and Balcony seat contributors will receive a “Center Stage” membership.

Friends membership courtesies include advance ticket sales and priority seating for Hoyt Sherman Place Theater performances (whenever possible), special backstage events with the performers, recognition in Friends of Hoyt Sherman Place Foundation promotional materials, a memorabilia gift and a quarterly Friends newsletter.

Perhaps the greatest benefit of contributing to help restore Des Moines' last historic performing arts theater is that we can all continue to experience the magic only a performance in this Theater can provide. Hoyt Sherman Place Theater has a rich tradition of providing our community with a special places to view, learn and participate in the performing and visual arts.  With your contribution, the tradition will continue for generations to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the existing seats be refurbished
or will new seats be purchased?

To maintain the historic character of the Theater auditorium, we will be refurbishing the existing seats. The wood backs and arm rests will be refinished and the seats and back panels will be upholstered providing for a wider, more comfortable seat.

If I attend a Hoyt Sherman Place event or
performance, will I be able to sit in my seat?

No, unfortunately not. The Theater is rented by a number of local, regional and national promoters as well as local performing arts and non-profit organizations. Seats to events are sold as both reserved and general admission making it impossible to guarantee you will be able to sit in “your seat.” You may, of course, request a ticket for the seat when ordering for reserved seating events, or if available, sit in your seat for general admission events.

May I purchase more than one seat?
Will they be located next to each other?

Yes, of course, you may purchase more than one seat. We will make every effort to locate them next to each other.

How will I know where my “named” seat is located?
You will receive a letter confirming your seat location prior to the reopening of the Theater.
